The University of Guilan is a major institute of higher education located in Rasht, a large city bordering the Caspian Sea, in the province of Gilan, in northern Iran.
The University is said to be the largest educational institution of the northern Iran among the provinces of Mazandaran, Golestan and Qazvin. Also from the structural viewpoint, it is one of the largest universities in the northern parts of Iran and currently has more than 12,000 students enrolled.
The university was established in 1974 as a collaborative effort between Iran and West Germany.
At first, the university was just commenced with 170 students and 10 members of faculty by offering courses such as German Literature and Civil Engineering
The university offers degrees in 55 fields for bachelors, 35 fields for masters, and 7 fields for PhD studies. It is the largest university in the province.
The institute has an active department in Caspian studies.
Caspain Journal of Environmental Sciences is published semi-annually as official publication of AUCRS (Association of Universities of Caspian Region States), which is published by University of Guilan, Iran.
There is a wide range of courses offered in the faculties of Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Humanities, Physical Education, Natural Resources, and the College of Art and Architecture.
More than 112 courses are on offer in 35 departments leading to B.Sc., B.Eng., M.Sc., B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. These courses aim to combine a traditional academic approach with new knowledge, methodology and technology, wherever appropriate.

Today, with more than 350 academic staff, 7 faculties and three research centers, Guilan University is the largest academic institution in northern Iran.
There are nearly 12000 students in 112 fields of study at the University of Guilan, including undergraduate, postgraduate and research scholars. Spread over four campuses with a total area of more than 2.5 km2, the University has a lively, creative and intimate atmosphere. The University of Guilan originally founded in 1975 and started its academic activities two years later with 120 students in seven departments of Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Agronomy, Animal Husbandry and German Literature.
Only 30 km away from the Caspian Sea, the University of Guilan is particularly fortunate in its position in the capital city of Guilan Province.
